With a religious note
For families for whom faith is at the heart of the day.
May God bless you on your First Holy Communion day and always.
Today you received Jesus for the first time. May He walk with you always.
On your First Communion, we pray that your faith grows as tall as you will.
Congratulations on your First Holy Communion. May your heart always be as open as it is today.
With every blessing on your special day, and a prayer for the years ahead.
May the love you felt today stay with you all your life. Congratulations.
Warm and personal
When you know the child well and want to say more than congratulations.
You've worked so hard for today, learning your prayers and getting ready. We're so proud of you.
Seven years old, in your Communion outfit, surrounded by everyone who loves you. What a day.
Today is all about you, and you deserve every bit of it. Congratulations, sweetheart.
We watched you walk up the aisle today and thought: how did she get so grown up?
Congratulations on your First Communion. Keep that big smile; it lit up the whole church.
Well done on your big day. You were calm, you were brave, and you were wonderful.
From a godparent
A godparent's card often goes with a gift. A few words make it more than an envelope.
To my godson on his First Holy Communion: I was there at your christening, and I'm so glad to be here today too.
Dear Saoirse, from your godmother: today you're taking another step, and I'll be beside you for every one.
To my goddaughter on her Communion day: I'm so proud to be your godparent. Treat yourself to something lovely.
Congratulations on your First Communion. Your godfather is very proud of you, today and always.
Little one, you've grown so much since your christening. Congratulations on your big day, from your godmother.
To my godson: here's to your Communion day, and to many more adventures together.
From grandparents
Grandparents often have a memory of their own Communion to share.
To our granddaughter on her First Holy Communion: we remember our own, and yours was even more beautiful.
Congratulations, Oisín. Your grandad made his Communion in the same church, many years ago.
We're so proud of you today. Love and hugs from Nana and Grandad.
On your Communion day, we give thanks for you, our wonderful grandchild.
Dear Saoirse, you looked like a little angel today. Congratulations from your very proud granny.
To our grandson: may today be a day you remember with a smile for the rest of your life.
To write in a book
An inscription lasts longer than a card. Add the date and your name.
For Saoirse, on your First Holy Communion, 15 May. Keep this, and read it again on your Confirmation day.
Given to you on your Communion day, by your godmother, with love.
For our grandson, who made his First Communion today and can already read this all by himself.
To you, on your big day. May this story remind you of everyone who was there.
For your First Holy Communion. One day you'll ask what it was like; the answer is in these pages.
Dear Oisín, today you were the hero of the day. In this book, you're the hero of the story too.
Write your own message in four steps
Write to the child
At seven or eight, children read their cards. Start with their name and speak to them directly.
Match the family's tone
For some families the day is above all a sacrament, for others it's also a big family day. A card with a religious note fits the first, a warm and personal one fits everyone.
Mention the effort
Children have been preparing for weeks: prayers, rehearsals, the outfit. A line that notices it means a lot.
If money goes in the card, add words too
Many Communion cards carry money. A few lines of your own make it more than an envelope, and they're what gets kept.
Slips to avoid
Only writing to the parents
The card is the child's, and they'll read it. At least the first line belongs to them.
Comparing with other children
“You looked the best in the class” sounds kind and sets children against each other. What they did and how they felt makes a better compliment.
Writing the amount in the card
If money goes in, there's no need to mention how much. The words are the part the child keeps.
Frequently asked questions

So the message becomes a keepsake
A book in which the child is the hero is kept and reread for years. You read the whole story for free and only pay afterwards.
