How it works

How your book comes about, step by step

You describe the main character and the idea for the story; we write the text and draw the hero and the cover. You read the whole story before you decide, and you only pay if you love the book. Here is every step, with the time it takes.

Before you buy

Four steps, all free

Nothing to pay until you've read the story.

  1. 1

    Who is the book for?

    A few seconds

The first question is the age of the child the book will be read to. It sets the language and the length of the story, whoever the main character is: a book for a two-year-old reads differently from a book for an eight-year-old.

  2. 2

    The characters

    30 seconds

The hero can be your child, their granny, a teddy or a little digger. Up to 3 main characters set off on the adventure together, and 2 supporting characters can join them: 5 at most in one story.

For each one, a short description is enough: hair, eyes, favourite outfit, what you'd recognise them by from far away. You can add a photo for one character or several; it's never required. Everything about it is on the page personalised book without a photo.

  3. 3

    The idea and the style

You tell us your idea in a sentence, or let us suggest ideas based on the child's interests and the occasion: a birthday, starting school, Christmas, or one you describe. If you like, you also give the book a title and a message the story will carry gently, such as friendship or courage.

Then you choose the illustration style from 21, from watercolour to ligne claire. The style you want isn't there? Describe it in your own words.

  4. 4

    The free preview

    6 to 8 minutes

We write the whole story across all 14 double pages and draw the portrait of each character, the cover and the first scenes. You read all of it, for free.

Not quite happy with the text yet? You can edit it yourself or ask for a different wording, shorter or funnier for example, before you pay anything.

After you buy

Three steps to the finished book

  1. 1

    Your characters

    eBook £4.50

Love the story? You choose the eBook, or the hardcover, which includes the eBook. After payment, you confirm your characters once in the book: every picture will be painted from them.

  2. 2

    The pictures

    About half an hour

Then we paint all 14 double pages, usually in about half an hour. You can watch the book fill up page by page, and you'll get an email as soon as it's ready.

Don't like a page? You can rewrite its text and have the picture repainted. The finished book can be read on screen and downloaded as a PDF for at least 12 months.

  3. 3

    The hardcover

    Printed in the European Union

When all the pictures are ready, you look through the book at your leisure, then start printing at the end of the book. It's printed for you, as a hardback in 21.6 × 28 cm, and delivered within up to 13 working days of your approval. If you bought the eBook first, its price is fully credited.

Prices and delivery times are on the page Prices and delivery.

Behind the scenes

What holds a book together from start to finish

A sheet for every character. Before the first picture, every character gets a precise sheet: face, hairstyle, clothes, size next to the others. Every double page is painted from that sheet, for the hero as much as for the dog, the best friend or Grandad.

A story planned page by page. Before each page, we settle what you see on it, who stands where and which objects from earlier pages must come back: the scarf lost on page 3, the cave dug on page 7. So the story can be read aloud in one go.

A painted surface for the text. Next to the picture, the text sits on a surface painted in the same world: the snow of the scene beside it, the meadow, the wooden floor. So every double page is painted twice.

Who writes, who draws

The role of artificial intelligence

The story and the pictures are created with generative artificial intelligence models, from what you describe. We say so in our privacy policy too.

The sheet for each character, the page-by-page plan and the painted surface for the text, described above, are there so that the result reads like a picture book: the same hero on every page, a story that holds together, one style from start to finish.

If you add a photo: under the contract terms of OpenRouter and the model providers, the data entered and the content created are not used to train artificial intelligence models.

Questions

Good to know

What happens if I don't like the story?

You pay nothing. Before you buy, you can edit the text, ask for a different wording or start again with another idea or another style.

Can several children be the heroes of the same book?

Yes. Up to 3 main characters share the adventure, siblings for example, and 2 supporting characters can join them, so 5 characters at most.

Can I create more than one book?

Yes, as many as you like, for the same child or for others. Every book starts with its own free preview.

Can the style change from page to page?

No, the style you choose is kept on every page of the book, just like each character's face and outfit. If you're unsure, you can compare the styles before you start.
