Gift from a godparent
A gift from godparent to godchild, with both of you in the story
Being asked to be a godparent is an honour, and it comes with a question: what do you give? A book in which your godchild is the hero, and you have a part, says something about the bond you're starting.

What a godparent gives
A godparent's gift is different from the others. It doesn't only mark the day, it marks a relationship that's meant to last for years. That's why many godparents look for something with meaning rather than something practical.
Who becomes a godparent depends on the church. In Ireland, a Catholic baptism needs at least one godparent who is a confirmed, practising Catholic aged 16 or over; the parents' brothers and sisters are a traditional choice, and friends are chosen more and more often.1 In the Church of Ireland, at least two sponsors are members of the Church of Ireland or of a church in communion with it.2 In the Catholic Church in the United States, a godparent must be at least 16 and fully initiated, and a baptised Christian from another church can stand alongside as a Christian witness.3
A book with two main characters. In the story, your godchild is the hero, and you can be there too, as the godparent who turns up at the right moment. Up to 5 characters can appear: the parents, brothers and sisters, even the dog.
Not only for the christening. Many godparents give a book later too: for a birthday, for the first day of school, for First Holy Communion. Each time, it can pick up where the last story left off.

Good to know
What's a meaningful gift from a godparent?
Something that says something about the bond itself, and lasts. A book in which your godchild is the hero, and you appear too, is read aloud in the first years and kept for later.
Who can be a godparent?
It depends on the church. For a Catholic baptism in Ireland, at least one godparent must be a confirmed, practising Catholic aged 16 or over. The Church of Ireland asks for at least two sponsors who are members. In the Catholic Church in the United States, a godparent must be at least 16 and fully initiated.
Can I appear in the story as the godparent?
Yes. Describe yourself in a few words and choose your role: you can be the one who goes on the adventure with your godchild, or who turns up at the right moment.
Is the book only for the christening?
No. Many godparents give a book for a birthday, the first day of school or First Holy Communion. The story follows whatever you describe.
