Baby shower gift

A baby shower gift for a child who hasn't arrived yet

At a baby shower, everyone brings something for a baby nobody has met. A book is one of the few presents that says something about the child themselves, once there's a name.

Baby shower

A present before the birth

The baby shower is a party held before the birth. It began in the early twentieth century and became a firm ritual in the United States from the middle of the century. A gift registry is common, and while showers were traditionally for the first child, with only women invited, today they are increasingly mixed.1

Most shower gifts are practical, and they're needed. A book is a different kind of present: it won't be outgrown, and it's the first story written for this particular child.

If the name is known, the book can carry it on the cover. If it isn't yet, you can create the book after the birth and give the shower guests a promise instead: the eBook is ready about half an hour after you buy.

The book can make room for the family waiting for the baby: parents, a big brother or sister, grandparents, the dog. Up to 5 characters can appear in the same story. For the older child, see our page on big brother and big sister gifts.

You read the whole story for free before you decide, and no photo is needed: the little hero is drawn from a description. The hardcover is delivered to 214 countries and territories, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and Canada; in Europe and North America it arrives in up to 13 working days after you approve the finished book.

Three story ideas

  • The story of everyone getting ready for the baby: the room, the cot, the family arguing happily about names.
  • A letter from the family to the baby, told as a journey through the seasons until the day they arrive.
  • The big brother or sister prepares a secret welcome for the new baby.
