St Patrick's Day

Ireland's national holiday

St Patrick's Day is Ireland's national holiday, and a public holiday.2 In 2027 it falls on Wednesday 17 March.1 The day is green: shamrocks, parades, flags, and in many families the first outing of spring.

It isn't a day with a gift tradition of its own. A book can still mark it, the way you'd mark a birthday with a card: a story in which your child marches in the parade, or finds out who St Patrick was, or meets a figure from an old Irish legend.

Irish legends are a treasure for stories. Publishers retell them for children today: Little Island, for example, has a retelling of the Táin, illustrated by Eoin Coveney, for ages 4 to 8 and 9 to 11.3 Your child's story can borrow the feel of those tales, with your child in the middle.

Brothers and sisters, cousins, the grandparents who host the family: up to 5 characters can appear. If you'd like names in Irish, just write them as you use them at home.

You read the whole story for free before you decide. The eBook is ready about half an hour after you buy. The hardcover is delivered to 214 countries and territories, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and Canada; in Europe and North America it arrives in up to 13 working days after you approve the finished book.

Three story ideas

  • On the morning of the parade, the child's shamrock goes missing, and the search leads through the whole town before the band starts playing.
  • The child meets a figure from an old Irish legend who needs help finding the way home.
  • The family's St Patrick's Day, told from the top of Grandad's shoulders.
