Books for 7 year olds: six classics for reading alone

At seven, the reading ages BookTrust gives start to match the child: Winnie-the-Pooh, Paddington and The Worst Witch all have a reading age of seven. Many children read their first whole book alone this year.

Here's what's going on at this age, six books rated for seven, and how to keep reading aloud alongside.

In brief

What's going on at this age

  • Reading age meets interest age. BookTrust gives many books two ages, one for listening and one for reading alone.1 At seven, for the classics on this list, both point to your child.
  • First Holy Communion in Ireland. Children usually make it in second class, at seven or eight, in spring and often on a Saturday in May.2
  • World Book Day. In the UK and Ireland it falls on the first Thursday in March; in 2027, on Thursday 4 March. Children dress up as a character from a book, and schools hand out book tokens.3
  • Still nine to twelve hours of sleep. That's what the American Academy of Pediatrics gives per day between six and twelve.4
Our suggestions

Six books for a 7 year old

The age comes from BookTrust, Common Sense Media or the publisher, and is named for each book.

  1. 01

    Charlotte's Web

    E. B. White · Illustrations: Garth Williams · Harper & Brothers, 1952 · Common Sense Media: age 7+

A pig called Wilbur is saved by a spider who writes words in her web. A story about friendship, and a first book that talks honestly about death: better read together.

  2. 02

    Pippi Longstocking

Astrid Lindgren · Illustrations: Lauren Child · Oxford University Press, 1945 · Oxford University Press: from 7

The strongest girl in the world lives alone with a horse and a monkey, and does exactly as she pleases. This edition is illustrated by Lauren Child.

  3. 03

    Winnie-the-Pooh

    A. A. Milne · Methuen, 1926 · BookTrust: interest age 4+, reading age 7+

At four it was read aloud; at seven, BookTrust's reading age says your child can read it alone. The same stories, a new way of meeting them.

  4. 04

    A Bear Called Paddington

    Michael Bond · HarperCollins Children's Books, 1958 · BookTrust: interest age 6 to 8, reading age 7+

The bear from Peru who gets everything slightly wrong, with the best intentions. Short chapters, each a small adventure, easy to read alone.

  5. 05

    The Worst Witch

Jill Murphy · Puffin, 1974 · BookTrust: interest age 6+, reading age 7+

Mildred's disasters at witch school, with a reading age of seven: one of the school stories children devour on their own.

  6. 06

    The Cat and the Devil

James Joyce · Little Island, 2021 · Little Island: 4-8

James Joyce's story for his grandson. Little Island lists it for four to eight, and a review on the same page says it will intrigue older readers of seven and up.

In practice

When your child reads alone

Keep the evening story. A child who reads alone during the day can still enjoy being read to at night, from books a little above their level.

Talk about the hard parts. Charlotte's Web ends with a death. If you read it together, you're there for the questions.

A Communion year. For a child making their First Holy Communion, a book with a few words inside lasts longer than a card. Our page of First Holy Communion messages has lines to write in one.

Our page on reading aloud explains what reading aloud still does when a child can read.
