Illustration: children's classics fanned out in worn cloth bindings, one of them open

Pippi Longstocking first appeared in Swedish in 1945, and she's still the strongest girl in the world. In English, one of the best-known editions today is Oxford University Press's, illustrated by Lauren Child.

Here's what age the publisher gives, what the book is about, and how it works read aloud and read alone.

In brief

In brief

  • From 7, according to Oxford University Press, for the edition illustrated by Lauren Child.1
  • Eighty years old in 2025. Astrid Lindgren's Swedish original was published in 1945.2
  • A publisher's age. BookTrust often gives two ages, an interest age and a reading age.3 Oxford gives one, which reads like a reading age: younger children enjoy Pippi read aloud.
The story

What the book is about

Pippi lives alone in Villa Villekulla with a horse and a monkey, a suitcase of gold coins and no grown-up to tell her what to do. She lifts her horse, goes to school once and doesn't like it, and outwits every adult who tries to take charge of her. Her neighbours Tommy and Annika watch in delight.

Children love her because she does everything they can't. Grown-ups often enjoy her too: a girl who is strong, kind and completely free.

In practice

Reading Pippi aloud, and alone

Read aloud, earlier. The chapters are short and self-contained, and many younger children love hearing Pippi's adventures before they could read them.

From seven, alone. That's the age Oxford University Press gives. The Lauren Child illustrations make the pages lively for a new reader.

Talk about the rules. Pippi breaks almost all of them. It's a good starting point for talking about which rules matter, and why.
